“Jesus was, and is, and is to come. He is constant. We are the variable.”
-Peter Wehner
When faced with cancer, it’s common to ask, Where is Jesus in all of this? In moments of suffering and uncertainty, our faith can feel tested, and it’s natural to wonder where God is in our journey. Yet, as scripture reminds us, Jesus is steadfast, unchanging, and ever-present, even amid our most significant trials. This blog explores how scripture provides comfort, strength, and encouragement for cancer patients, helping them reconnect with faith during challenging times. In this blog, you will find scripture for cancer patients.
Where is Jesus? Finding Faith in Times of Suffering
In our most difficult times, it may feel as though Jesus is distant. But the Bible assures us of His presence:
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” — Hebrews 13:8 He is where He has always been—unchanged, even when life around us shifts and becomes uncertain. In moments of illness, when we feel we’ve moved away from Him, it’s a reminder that we are the ones who may have drifted. Jesus has always been with the brokenhearted, the downtrodden, and the suffering, offering hope and comfort to those in need. When Jesus walked the earth, He wasn’t confined to temples or caught up in the praise of religious leaders. Instead, He was with the marginalized, the sick, and the weary: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28 In your journey, Jesus is not far away. He walks alongside you, offering peace and strength. Whether through prayer, scripture, or the comfort of loved ones, He is present, helping to carry the weight of your burden.
Overcoming Fear With Faith
Fear often accompanies a cancer diagnosis, but fear was never meant to dominate our lives. Fear can deceive, ambush, and rob us of peace. Yet, God calls us to a higher perspective: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.” — 2 Timothy 1:7
Cancer often brings a series of unknowns, which can lead to fear, but God does not desire fear for us. Instead, He has given us strength, love, and peace. Remember that fear is not from God; it is a tactic of the enemy to distract us from His truth. When you feel afraid, turn to the Word, which reassures us of God’s constant presence and His power to heal physically and spiritually.
Renewing Hope: God’s Promises for Healing and Strength
In times of illness, it’s common to seek hope in various places—through treatments, doctor’s appointments, or procedures. Yet true hope comes from understanding that God is our healer, our source of abundant wellness.
“But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds,’ declares the LORD.” — Jeremiah 30:17 God’s promises of restoration and healing are ever-present, whether we see immediate physical healing or experience spiritual renewal. Healing is a physical process and a journey of the heart and spirit. Sometimes, our greatest healing happens not in the curing of our bodies but in the strengthening of our faith, the deepening of our trust in God, and the comforting presence of His Spirit.
The “Why” Behind Suffering: Growing Closer to God
We don’t always understand why we suffer. It’s easy to become disillusioned, questioning God’s role in our pain. However, suffering often draws us closer to God, allowing us to experience His love in new and profound ways. The Bible reminds us that trials serve a purpose: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” — James 1:2-3 Though we may not rejoice in suffering itself, we can find joy in the growth and strength it brings to our spirit. Suffering molds us, teaching us endurance, empathy, and humility. Through it all, we learn to rely on God, discovering His comfort and peace in ways we may never have experienced otherwise.
Prayer and Scripture: Anchoring the Soul in Faith
Scripture serves as a powerful reminder of God’s unwavering love and strength. In times of illness, certain verses can offer solace and hope, reminding us of His presence and His power:
1. Psalm 46:1-2: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.”
This verse is a beautiful reminder that God is our steadfast refuge, a stronghold in times of trouble.
2. Isaiah 41:10: “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
When fear tries to creep in, God’s assurance in Isaiah reminds us of His protective presence.
3. Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Even in difficult seasons, God’s plans are for our ultimate good. This verse encourages us to trust Him, knowing He sees the bigger picture.
A Call to Abundant Wellness: Living Fully in Faith
As cancer patients and loved ones walk this challenging journey, it’s essential to focus on abundant wellness—a perspective that sees beyond physical illness to embrace complete wellness in spirit, mind, and heart. True wellness isn’t simply the absence of disease; it’s a
thriving relationship with God, a life rooted in faith, and the daily renewal of hope. Jesus offers peace that transcends our understanding, comfort that soothes our deepest fears, and a love that never leaves us. Leaning into this abundant wellness means trusting in His plans, finding strength in His promises, and resting in His presence.
“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:7
Conclusion: Drawing Closer to Jesus Through Scripture
In the midst of cancer’s challenges, Jesus remains with you—unchanging, compassionate, and close. Through scripture, may you find comfort, strength, and a renewed sense of purpose. Cancer may be part of your story, but it does not define your journey. Look to Jesus, the One who is, who was, and who is to come, and find the peace, hope, and abundant wellness He offers.
May these scriptures remind you of God’s love and presence as you walk this path. And remember, where there is faith, there is strength; where there is Jesus, there is always hope.
